Sustainability isn't something that sits alongside facilities maintenance, it should be built into it. We take an ESG-focused approach, helping customers make their buildings more efficient, resilient and sustainable through the work we do every day, not as a separate service, but as part of how we maintain your buildings day to day.
We see every maintenance visit as a chance to identify ways of improving efficiency, reducing energy consumption and extending the lifecycle of an asset. Our engineers use asset condition reports and lifecycle surveys to build a picture of how equipment is likely to perform over the months and years ahead, flagging potential failures long before they become emergencies. That foresight matters. It means a client can weigh up their options calmly and plan a replacement on their own timeline.
Identifying issues early also means we can offer clients options, not just one route forward. With growing government targets around pushing the industry away from gas fired appliances, air source heat pumps are frequently the next step. However, building infrastructure doesn’t always allow for that switch, so we look at the full range of possibilities, which can include like for like assets built on newer, more energy efficient technology.
Not every ESG improvement needs to be a major capital project. Smaller changes can have a real and lasting impact on energy efficiency over time. PIR sensors on lighting, room sensors on air conditioning units that would otherwise run unnecessarily, and BMS control systems on energy centre pump sets all add up to meaningful savings.
It isn’t only client buildings we think about, we're also focused on the environmental impact of our own operations. Electric and hybrid vehicles are an obvious direction for our industry, though they bring challenges such as charging infrastructure for engineers and engineer downtime. This remains a longer-term goal for us. In the meantime, we're working to reduce engineer travel by hiring engineers in smaller regions to cover specific areas, and by aligning our business development approach with clients and sites within those same regions.
ESG is about more than the environment for us at Guardian, our people are central to everything we do. Health, safety and personal development matter just as much. Our engineers receive regular health and safety and technical training, and we invest in upskilling too. Our electricians, for instance, are now trained to install and maintain PV solar systems, giving us a stronger understanding of how these technologies perform on buildings.
That same commitment extends to the next generation coming into the industry. Our apprenticeship programme currently supports two active apprentices, building on a track record of apprentices who have gone on to succeed in both engineering and office-based roles.
ESG is about governance too, how we operate as a business, not just what we deliver. We work within all statutory regulations and hold accreditations including SafeContractor, NICEIC, GasSafe, Oftec and REFCOM, giving clients confidence in how we operate as well as what we deliver.
Across everything we do, environmental, social and governance, our approach is simple: Plan. Maintain. Identify. Improve. Measure. Every maintenance visit is an opportunity to identify an improvement, recommend the right intervention and, where possible, demonstrate the impact in terms of energy, carbon, cost and asset life.
So, your maintenance contract doesn't just keep your building running, it can actively support your wider ESG objectives. We don't just maintain buildings. We help make them more efficient, resilient and sustainable.
